MEMBER AREA

Road lighting has a significant influence on our society but there is currently a lack of evidence on its impacts (both positive and negative) on the environment, road safety and energy consumption/light emissions.

The aim of this call “Road Lighting - The Light We Need” is to produce practical guidance on the implementation of sustainable road lighting across Europe’s roads with a view to reducing illumination impacts on nature, mitigating skyglow, improving road safety and reducing energy consumption. This will require a holistic approach to address a challenge that all European countries are facing in the midst of the current energy crisis.

Following an open Call, the Programme Executive Board subsequently selected the following project:

SAFELUX - Safe Sustainable Road Lighting

The SAFELUX project, commissioned by CEDR, aims to identify measures to reduce light pollution arising from road lighting. You are all invited to participate in the upcoming workshop. The workshop is designed to jointly explore, evaluate, and develop potential measures to reduce road‑related light emissions, balancing safety, environmental impact, and energy efficiency.

The contribution from our partners and their expertise is essential for identifying promising measures, evaluating feasibility, and providing evidence, risks, experiences, and perspectives needed to shape the SAFELUX guidelines for future practices.

Project Partners: AECOM (UK, Project Coordinator), Haskoning (Netherlands), Newcastle University (UK) and AETHON Engineering (Greece).
