20 Years of CEDR Transnational Research (2006–2026)

For two decades, CEDR has brought together Europe’s National Road Authorities to collaborate on research that addresses shared challenges and delivers practical solutions. Since the early pilot projects in 2006, this cooperation has evolved into a structured and impactful programme supporting innovation, sustainability, and safety across the road network.

While the first full transnational research call was launched in 2008, collaboration began earlier. Initial pilot projects in 2006 and 2007 laid the groundwork for what has become a sustained and coordinated effort, supported by European partnerships and aligned with wider EU objectives.

Key Milestones

  • 2005–2007 – Foundations and pilot projects
  • 2008 – First full transnational research call
  • 2010s – Expansion of thematic programmes and participation
  • 2020s – Increased focus on climate resilience, digitalisation, and automation

Delivering Impact
CEDR research has enabled NRAs to:

  • Share knowledge and reduce duplication of effort
  • Accelerate the uptake of innovation in road infrastructure
  • Contribute to European priorities such as decarbonisation and digital transformation
  • Strengthen cross-border collaboration and harmonisation

Looking Ahead
As mobility systems evolve, the role of collaborative research remains critical. Building on 20 years of experience, CEDR continues to support its members in addressing emerging challenges—ensuring that Europe’s road networks remain safe, resilient, and fit for the future.
