CEDR
MEMBER AREA

CEDR WG Road Safety's main goal is to develop and share knowledge among European NRAs and develop coordinated activities on the improvement of safety of road networks. In this context, the Group is particularly focused on the following challenging aspects, among others:

  • the aim of reaching zero fatalities and serious injuries in road traffic (Vision Zero),
  • the development of road safety as a vital part of sustainability,
  • the improvement of safety for all road users, especially the vulnerable ones including road workers, and
  • the improvement of road safety through digitalisation.

In the recent past, the Group has thoroughly analysed the implications of the EU RISM II Directive by focusing mainly on the Network-wide Road Safety Assessment used to evaluate accident risks. On this issue, the main challenge is the transposition of RISM II into national legislation.

In 2024, the Group will play a key role in the realisation of the objectives of the Belgium Flanders Presidency of CEDR which revolve around the preservation of current and future road infrastructures in Europe and the role of NRAs as digital road managers.

Finally, CEDR's WG Road Safety is expected to further work on the following:

  • promotion of the 'safety system approach' which is a holistic view of the road system including the human factor and vehicles, on top of road infrastructure,
  • revision of CEDR's road safety-related KPIs important to European NRAs, and
  • update of CEDR's position paper on road safety entitled 'Main Road Safety Challenges for European Road Directors in the next 5-10 years - towards the Vision Zero' (expected in 2025).
